Jazz Orchestra

November 23, 2011

Dear Jazz Orchestra Students:

Saturday, November 26th – Trivia Night at Woonona Surf Club, Kurabba Road, Woonona.  Bring your instruments, a music stand, drums, keyboard, and amps as needed.  I will bring music books…but you’ll need to bring your own gear.  Dress nicely.  Arrive at 6pm for 6:30pm performance.  If its raining we won’t play.

November 27th – BBQ at Shellharbour Woolworths off Lake Entrance Rd.  The Jazz Orchestra will NOT play, and I will NOT be there.  The following Jazz Combo will perform from 11am-1pm and will need to bring their own music gear, stands, combo book, extension cords etc:

11am-1pm Jazz Combo of Jack Contencin, Matt Vecanski, Jeremy Quinn, Jack Purdon, Connor Birch, Er-Chi, Adrian, Rhyan (these are the children of parents scheduled to do the first shift of the BBQ).

After 1pm we’ll do the BBQ without music (unless some of the kids want to organize something).

BBQ Duty is as follows:
11am-1:30pm:  Bernadette W, Angela Quinn, Rose Purdon, Kim Vecanski, Ted, Meryn Birch
1:30-4pm:  Rose Contencin, Sandra Quinn, Wayne McNair, Gabriel McNair, Sabine Kelly

Pam Cannings will bring the sausages, drinks, and cashbox.

Saturday, December 3rd – Crown Street Mall 12-2pm. The Jazz Orchestra will NOT be playing.  Owen Cannings is organizing a combo to perform on this date.

On Sunday, December 4th, the Jazz Orchestra will be performing at Town Hall at 5pm as part of the Wollongong Conservatorium Open Day/Christmas Concert. Dress as we did for the IPAC concert.  Arrive at 4:30pm.  You will NOT need music stands, keyboard, or drums.

ALSO…I will be asking Jazz Combos to play from 10am-1pm that day.  So leave the whole day open if you can.  This is a great opportunity to set up a table and sell some raffle tickets and promote December 11th Jazz Picnic (Jazz In the Gardens).

On Sunday, December 11th the Jazz Orchestra will be performing at the Jazz Picnic at the Conservatorium.  This is an all-day jazz festival featuring all the jazz combos, the SuperBIGband,  The Wollongong Conservatorium Jazz Orchestra, and the World According To James.  The Jazz Orchestra will perform with the SuperBIGband at 11am and again sometime between 12pm-4pm.  I will nail down exact performance time as soon as I can.  The Jazz Orchestra will be the hosts of this event.  Please set aside the WHOLE day for set up in the morning and clean up afterwards.

I will need someone to organize sausage sizzle and we will hold the drawing for the raffle on this day at 4pm.

Thursday, December 15th – Jazz Combo in the Mall 5-8pm.  To be assigned.  (This is part of the series of gigs that the mall is paying us for that is going into our fundraising effort.) …turn over….

Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Orchestra 2011 / February 2, 2011

Dear Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble Students and Parents:

Please look over this note carefully.  I am hoping to have better communication with regards to the expectations of being in this band this year.

I consider the Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Orchestra to be honour groups.  Everyone is in these bands because they have been invited to join.  To stay in these ensembles, you are expected to attend all rehearsals.  If you cannot, please let me know.  Be on time.  If you continually miss rehearsals, I may ask that you do not continue to participate in subsequent terms.

All members are expected to come rehearsals prepared.  You are expected to practice your music and your scales to remain in these ensembles.   Expect to have learnt all your major, minor, and dominant scales this year.

It is assumed that you have an interest in Jazz music if you are in these ensembles.  If you have no interest in Jazz, please contact me as soon as possible and we will seek to find a more suitable ensemble to fit your needs.

Concert Attendance.  Last year there were 18 jazz shows.  We host these shows for the benefit of our jazz students.  You are expected to attend as many of these jazz shows as possible.  You must attend an average of 1 show per term to continue your enrolment in Jazz Ensemble.  Attendance is mandatory. The absolute best way for us to teach you how to play jazz, is for us to show you how the professionals do it. If you have financial reasons for not attending jazz shows, please contact Alex Masso, or me and we will insure that you are able to see the show.  Please keep in mind that there are other ensembles at the Con that do not require you to attend jazz shows.  This is the ensemble that does.

Important Dates:
Feb 25th Motion Jazz Show 8pm at Con
March 11th Dave Theak Band Jazz Show 7pm at Con
April 8th Jazz Showcase/Paul Williamson 6pm – All Jazz Combos, Jazz Ens, Jazz Orch to perform.
April 23 Easter Jazz Festival Wollongong – Jazz Ens and Jazz Orch to perform.
May 6-8 Mt. Gambier  (TBC)
May 19th Marc Isaacs Resurgence Band – Jazz Show
June 3-5th Mothership Jazz Orch. Ilawrra Music Festival – All con jazz groups perform.

Please sign that you have read the above and return this letter to Eric Dunan by February 9th
